Ok, so I’ve had a few questions lately about the lunch boxes I use. As you can see, I have a bit of a collection and I love them all for different reasons. I was going to do a quick Facebook Live Video on the pros and cons of each but realized the only quiet time I have to do it is when my kids are in school and USING the lunch boxes and, well, that wouldn’t be very helpful if I couldn’t show them to you! So here’s the scoop!
PLANETBOX: The Planetbox is one of our favorites and I’m pretty sure my daughter took her lunch to school in it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY last year. It comes in a few sizes but I think this one works best for early grade school.
PROS: easy to clean & dishwasher safe, stainless steel, keeps foods separated, comes in a couple different sizes, kids can customize the outside magnets, easy to pack, my daughter loves the little “suitcase” carrying case.
CONS: the price (it’s definitely the most expensive of the bunch but it does hold up), it’s also a bit on the heavy side, the containers aren’t leak-proof (but they have dippers & pods for wet/messy foods), not good for warm/hot foods.
YUMBOX: This is the Yumbox and it has been in heavy rotation now for two years and still holds up well. I thought of getting a Planetbox for my youngest who starts Kindergarten this year but this works and he likes it.
PROS: cute little compartments labeled with the food they are intended to hold (which I never follow), comes in an assortment of colors & tray layouts, inside tray comes out for easy cleaning, dishwasher safe, leak-proof (I LOVE this – you can put yogurt in there and not worry about it seeping into the rest of the food), reasonably priced.
CONS: it’s plastic. Seriously, no complaints on this one.
ZIPLOC: These Ziploc Easy Lunchboxes were one of my first bento-style lunch containers and have been kicking around for at least three years. The ones I have are leak-proof between sections but sadly (and I don’t know why) they don’t make them like that anymore.
PROS: they are cheap and come in a pack of four (which means you don’t have to rewash each night!), they are stackable and store well, they are lightweight, there is a compartment big enough to fit a sandwich, dishwasher safe.
CONS: not leak-proof, with heavy use you will need to replace them sooner.
LUNCHBOTS: These cute little metal bento boxes were my go-to when the kids were in nursery school. They range in size from one compartment to five so there are lots of options.
PROS: stainless steel, dishwasher safe, layout variety. I love these the most for packing snacks on the go!
CONS: I always worry about the tops coming off if they are jostled in a backpack so I put a rubber band around them…just remind your kids to do the same when they finish to prevent a food-filled lunch bag! Not leak-proof (but they do have some containers that are) or good for warm foods but they have those too.
And there’s the round up! Happy packing!
